Potter In Theaters Now
19 November 2005
I've just returned from seeing Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire for the second, that's right second, time today. Pretty impressive when you know that I also had to work an 8 hour shift.
What are my thoughts? Well, I'm glad you asked. Amazing, fantastic, brilliant, but most of all delicious. You read right. I must give Mr. Rickman kudos for being nothing short of downright delicious in his latest outing as Professor Severus Snape. His silky sneer when he tells Harry: "Do not lie to me" only wants to make you turn into a pathological liar if he'll give you a detention every time you don't tell the truth.
As for the movie as a whole, it is the best yet. There are no cheesy gag me with a spoon scenes abundantly present in the first two films - although there is a moment during the Yule Ball that will have every true rock fan cringing - and the artistic license has been reigned it from last year's Prisoner of Azkaban. It is darker, more sinister and surprisingly humorous. The Weasley twins have finally been given more screen time, directly correlating with the amount of laughter in the house. It is also a more mature, subtle humor although it has its share of running gags (Filch and his cannon is but one example). The acting from the kids is much better and the adults get a little more time to explore characters outside of the lens of the children. While some scenes were regrettably cut, Newell's vision captured the spirit of the book even while it had to leave some would-be memorable scenes ("I see no difference") by the wayside.
